The Dragon’s Back And Waun Fach

This walk ascends the lumps and dips of the Y Grib ridge, known as the Dragon’s Back, from the tip of the tail to the highest point of the Black Mountains, Waun Fach. It takes in the remains of Castell Dinas, the highest castle in Wales and England, which dates from the very earliest days of the Norman conquest of Britain.Virtually all the ascent is in the first half of the walk with a couple of steep but easy sections. On a good day the views are extensive, covering the full length of the Brecon Beacons National Park and as far as the Malvern hills in the Midlands. Good underfoot throughout but this is a mountain day and therefore exposed to the changeable nature of mountain weather with little shelter.

Parking is in the layby by the Dragon’s Back pub (Pengenffordd, Talgarth, Brecon LD3 0EP) on the A479 between Crickhowell and Talgarth and costs £2 per vehicle.
