We will explore the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside surrounding the village of Myddfai, which many centuries ago was renowned across Wales for the place where the herbalists of this village practiced their remedies which were recorded in an important document known as the ‘Red Book of Hergest’.

During the walk we will learn more about these Physicians of Myddfai and the legend of the ‘Lady of the Lake’. We will also visit the Physicians Well and the gravestone of the last Myddfai physician. As we walk we can look out for some of the medicinal herbs that would have been used in the remedies.

We meet at the village hall car park next to Myddfai Community Hall which has an excellent cafe and a shop selling local arts and crafts and some amazing home made preserves. Its even had a visit from a Welsh Prince who endorsed it.

We head off from the village hall for about 1.5kms heading east to pickup a bridleway signposted Ffynnon Meddygon (Physicians Well). These climbs steeply to the Physicians Moorland where they are spectacular views of the Black Mountain range of the Brecon Beacons.

We pick up a sheep track that leads us to the small spring known as the Physicians Well, the pure water from such streams being an important ingredient for the herbal cures. After this we head for the mountain of Mynydd Myddfai where there are superb views of the Tywi valley and back to Myddfai. We might encounter some mountain ponies who like to frequent this area.

Our descent takes us past a farm that the ‘lady of the lake legend says was the home of the young farmer who married her. From here we pick up a bridleway that will return us to the minor road from where we retrace our steps to Myddfai village.

This is a circular 5 mile (9km) walk with some steep climbs – height gain 275m – using minor roads, forest tracks and open moorland which can be boggy.
