The Teifi Pools And Strata Florida
The Teifi Pools are a collection of picturesque fishing lakes scattered across the wild uplands of Powys.
We meet at the car park next to the striking ruins of the Cistercian 12th century Abbey called Strata Florida near the village of Pontrhydfendigaid. Strata Florida ruins are the resting place of Welsh princes and one of Wales most significant historic sites. Here there is a toilet and a seasonal cafe. Entrance to the abbey is chargeable as managed by Cadw.
We head off from the abbey along a quiet lane for the first part of the walk passing a reservoir to reach a bridleway signed for the Teifi Pools. The route soon takes us over a ford and gradually climbs through the beautiful valley of Nant Egnant to a cairn at the summit of Cwm Egnant. The path ahead eventually reaches the dam wall of the first lake – Llyn Egnant. Here we can take in the views and grab a few photos 🙂
We then make our way towards Llyn Teifi, the largest of the Teifi Pools and the source of the River Teifi, stopping for lunch at a top spot called Claerddu Bothy.
This is a circular 9 mile (15km) walk with 450m of ascent in a remote moorland setting that can be boggy.
