Event Details

The Berwyn mountains above Pistyll Rhaeader are the location of Annwn, the Celtic otherworld, once ruled by Gwyn ap Nudd, the king of the fairy folk. It is said that people have occasionally spotted fairies on the bridge below the falls, their wings twinkling in the sunlight.

About

We will start our walk from the car park and ascend above the falls, where you can take a small detour to glance down the 240 foot drop. we will then continue rising to the summit of Moel Sych. From here on a good day you will get views across to Snowdonia. While we are up here we will take a walk along the ridge to Cadair Berwyn, the highest point in Wales outside a national park.

We will descend down to Llyn Lluncaws, where legend has it that a red dragon lived, who used to terrorise the local communities, until they hatched a cunning plan to kill him. I’ll let you know what happened on the walk. We then take the quarry track down into the valley. Near the bottom there is a fantastic viewpoint of the waterfall in the distance, don’t forget your camera.

When we reach the road, we have a short section before crossing to the other side of the valley and heading back towards Pistyll Rhaeader, passing old quarry workings. As we enter the woods you will hear the roar of the waterfall before we arrive near the base with a great vantage point. There is an opportunity to have a swim or paddle in the pool below the falls, before popping into the cafe for a hot drink and cake.
