Penycloddiau Hill Fort – Clwydian AONB
We will visit 2 separate hill forts on this walk, the first Moel Arthur is believed to be the burial place of Bodecia, and then Penycloddiau, which is one of the largest hillforts in Wales, over 20+ hectares. The Clwydians are designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), and this walk will highlight some of the best parts.
We start our walk up a gentle wide track past a reservoir and with views up to the Jubilee tower on moel Famau. This takes us to the spine of the Clwyds, with views into the vale of Clwyd. We follow part of the Offas Dyke path along the top of the Clwyds for a while until we have to take a shortish steep path down towards Moel Arthur. Soon we will reach the forest at Penycloddiau and descend a gentle path through the pine scented woods. Next we will take a bridleway that is like walking along the balcony of the vale of Clwyd, with panoramic views across the vale.
Next we go up onto the Penycloddiau hill fort, with a chance to explore the raised mounds, house platforms and the 360 degree views across to Snowdonia, out to the Irish sea. Then into the woods, on a single file track, before reaching Moel Arthur. We then have a nice wide track and short single track road back to Cilcain, where we can get our well deserved tea and cake at the community café, or something a little stronger at the white horse inn.
This is a walk of just over 10 miles through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so don’t forget your camera. We will have 680m of ascent, but this will all be on gentle gradients, with just one short section of steep down.
