Moel Siabod Via The Daear Ddu Ridge Scramble

The Daear Ddu ridge is one of the most enjoyable ways up a mountain in Snowdonia and Siabod’s summit offers some of the finest views in the national park. This 9.5km (6 mile) circular is a gem, remains relatively quiet and is perfect for beginners, adventurous children and even haggard old mountain goats.

Beginning at Bryn Glo in Capel Curig we cross Pont Cyfyng with its impressive waterfalls and head up onto a bleak tract of moorland where our mountain suddenly hoves into view.  A pleasant grassy cart track leads on to the abandoned Foel Quarry passing Llyn Golchi on the way and it is now that the feeling of being welcomed by the mountain becomes palpable.

Onwards we go to a dark but achingly beautiful quarry pool which signals the start of a new chapter in the walk. Our surroundings grow wilder as we pull up into the heathery Cwm Foel where its llyn takes centre stage before your eyes come to rest on an intimidating looking ridge sweeping up from left to right. This is our route to the summit but fear not, it is an imposter that offers routes to suit every walker from the timid to the brave. This is a great place to take in the atmosphere and refuel before our final assault on Siabod.

We skirt the eastern shore of the stunning Llyn y Foel (which after wet weather can be very damp underfoot; gaiters may be appreciated but are not essential) before getting onto our ridge, Daear Ddu (Black Earth) where 350 metres of airy but not scary scrambling takes us directly to the summit of the mountain.

On clear days the view from Siabod’s summit is extensive in 360 degrees and is a fitting reward for your efforts. It’s great fun trying to identify the multitude of peaks on display Our descent route follows the the NE ridge which is less hands on than Daear Ddu but allows to walk in a superb position high above Llyn y Foel.

Coffee and cake at the Bryn Glo cafe afterwards? It would be rude not to!
