2 Lakes, 3 Peaks – The Ultimate Carmarthen Fans?

This approximately 10 mile walk is a serious mountain day taking in the best of the Carmarthen Fans, or Mynydd Du.

Starting at the parking for Llyn y Fan Fawr the route goes up past small falls and pools to the lake. From there we go along the lake shore and then follow the base of the steep escarpment until we drop down towards Llyn y Fan Fach. This is, in my opinion, without doubt the most scenic approach to our second lake, nestled in its semicircle of 800+ft cliffs. From the dam wall we take the path on to the ridge and reach the first peak, Bannau Sir Gaer, then continue along the ridge to Picws Du. The final peak is Fan Brycheiniog, the highest in the Carmarthen Fans from where we drop down to Llyn y Fan Fawr again and back to the cars.
